Just three hours down the hill from big, bad, freezing La Paz, lies steaming-hot, laid-back Coroico.
Set on a hilltop in the subtropical Yungas region, most travellers come here for some serious R&R.
From the village itself, the view to coca fields, coffee plantations, deep-forested canyons and sky-puncturing mountains is simply breathtaking - unless, that is, you come here in October and November, when the smoke from seasonal burning unfortunately obscures most of the scenery.

Blimey! Homemade icecream in the Bolivian subtropics! How good can life get? Villa Bonita is a wonderful restaurant run out of a beautiful rambling wooden house about 600 metres down the road from the plain plaza in Coroico village.
The restaurant's hippy Bolivian owners serve tremendous vegetarin fare (loving those lentil burgers!), and did I mention the homemade icecream? Made from fresh fruits.... ducle de leche...yogurt... banana split...sundaes... the lot... and slathered with cream. And they've got a wonderful outdoor yoga terrace, where, for a small fruit donation, you can join the owner in her early morning or nighttime private yoga practise.
