For WWOOFers (Worldwide Workers on Organic Farms) or anyone looking for an earthy place to do some chilling in Bolivia, check out Ginger“s Farm. It's an organic farm (great veggie patch and the cows are prolific!) on the paved road from Santa Cruz to Bermejo (on the way to Samaipata). The farm's hosts are a very musical/arty Bolivian/American couple with three charming children. Accommodation is communal and basic, the toilet is of the composting variety, but the shower is damn hot! For 65 Bolivianos a day (roughly US$9), it includes all food and board, you'll learn how to make tufo, cheese, beer, hummus, bread and jewellery or spend the day just chilling by the adjacent river which has a few natural waterslides. There's also a few nice hiking opportunities in the surrounding mountains. For musicians, there's a whole bunch of instruments lying around the farmhouse and great jam sessions every night. While the volunteers (WWOOFers) don't pay anything, they are worked to the bone (seven hours a day, six days a week). To get to the farm, jump in a communal taxi from Santa Cruz (25 Bolivianos per person, 1.5 hours) and ask them to drop you off at 'Ginger's Farm'.
