It is difficult to imagine that this is the same city as the Phnom Penh of 1975, a metropolis of two million that on the sudden whim of the late despot Pol Pot was forcibly emptied, to become a ghost town that languished and rotted until the downfall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

With just a little exaggeration, the New York Times recently described Phnom Penh as “the new Prague”.

By dining at Friends (House 215, Street 13, Phnom Penh; tel (+855-23) 426-748) you get to help a very worthy organisation that aims to help street kids by helping them to help themselves.
The restaurant is run by former street kids now learning hospitality skills, with the aim of establishing themselves in business.
Another of Friends’ ventures is Romdeng Restaurant (House 21, Street 278, Phnom Penh; tel (+855-92) 219-565).
