The sleepy seaside town of Kaikoura is the best place in New Zealand to swim with dolphins.
Some 180km north of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island, it is backed by the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura mountains.

A great restaurant, albeit pricier than your average Kaikoura joint, is "The White Morph". No, I didn't go in there just because it's also my nickname, but because I'd heard it did a GREAT seafood platter.
Now, firstly, let's get some things straight. Yes, it's part of the "White Morph Motor Inn" but don't let that put you off. I've heard AWFUL reports about the motel itself (shabby, dingy, damp, unfriendly) but, believe me, the restaurant is in a different league. They really should disconnect themselves from the motel.
I had the seafood platter - crayfish, scallops, prawns, oysters and more - beautiful. If I remember correctly it cost around $75 for a platter for two.. worth it!!
Enjoy!

Kaikoura is located some 180km north of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island, it is backed by the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura mountains. As well as the dusky dolphins, Kaikoura is an excellent place to spot rare Hector dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, wandering albatross, blue penguins and sperm whales (appropriately, the peninsula Kaikoura sits on is shaped like whale flukes).
