To jump or not to jump, that is the question facing every child, teenager, baby boomer and geriatric who passes through this adventure sports-mad town. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of marketing pressure or attach yourself to a glorified rubber band and fling yourself headlong into thin air.... Well, that's up to you to decide (oh go on, just do it! Do it!!).
There's three bungy places to choose from in the Queenstown area, and if you're gonna do the deed, you can't go past the original AJ Hacket bungee jump off the Kawarau Bridge. This is the place where all the madness began. The bridge is 43 metres above a gorgeous, raging forest-flanked river. You can request that they extend the elastic chord slightly so that you're dunked in the river before rebounding up into space.
The most central jump in the area is Ledge Bungy, where you fly off a platform at the top of the Queenstown gondola. It's a 47m-high jump but you´re a lofty 400m above Queenstown. There's a great view of the bungy platform from the gondola itself and the site of screeching people, the blood leeched from their faces as they leap into a ravine, is enough to put off the most hardened adrenaline junkie.
For the most crap-your-pants bungy experience in Queenstown (and possibly the world), do not pass go, do not collect $200, go straight to the N-N-N-Nevis Highwire Bungy. It's a half an hour 4WD ride out of Queenstown to get to the jumping destination, which makes you feel a bit like a nervous lamb heading off to the slaughter. The jump is 134m above the Nevis River which translates into 8 seconds of freefall. Wicked!
