"The jewel of the West Coast", Punakaiki is a tiny settlement on New Zealand's South Island.
It is dramatically positioned indeed, with densely forested mountains dropping down to sweeping surf beaches.
Punakaiki's most visited site is its blowholes and layers of weathered limestone dubbed Pancake Rocks.

it is very, very special - the west coast is an often overlooked part of New Zealand but is as beautiful as those places often are. If you want to see an unspoilt perfect sunset in NZ but still have one foot in civiliation (ie the Scenic circle hotel) or closeby campsites, then Punakaiki is just about perfect. Wow, I'm getting goosebumps just writing about the place. Probably about time for another visit.
Punakaiki is a very atmospheric place. The Scenic circle hotel on the beach is a great spot, with the restaurant opening directly onto the beach.
The Punakaiki Beach Hostel is an inexpensive, friendly West Coast pad you can really kick back in for a few days. We love their oceanside hot tub. After a chilly dip in the raging sea, it´s fun to run up the hill and feel the life return to your limbs as you submerge yourself in their hot tub!
I live a couple of hours away from Punakaiki. It's a wild and unique place where you can watch, hear and feel the powers of mother nature. Don't miss it if you're travelling round New Zealand but be sure to check the tides - you want to get there in timem for a high tide! :-)
