Located more than 600 kilometres southeast of Lima, Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru and is nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca - The White City - thanks to the region's pearly white volcanic stone used to construct most of the city's colonial-era buildings.

When in Arequipa DO NOT MISS the Monasterio de Santa Catalina - a vast convent complex which once housed over 200 secluded nuns and is today still home to 30 sisters. Painted in brilliant blue, stark white and rusty red, you could spend hours wandering through the sunlit cloisters, labyrinth of narrow stone streets, rustic bedrooms of the nuns and elaborate chapels. From the grounds, the views of the snowcapped volcanoes that frame Arequipa, are tremendous. All up, this is definitely worth the hefty US$10 (30 soles) entrance fee.
